Summaries
"B is captured by baddies, beaten and locked in a crate with a corpse. When heÕs found, he is deeply catatonic and only DÕs presence can draw some response, even though B cannot speak anymore. B is claustrophobic, afraid of darkness and being alone: when the lights fail at the hospital heÕs in, he jumps out of the window and runs - D finds him in front of DÕs old flat, takes him home and comforts him, very sweetly tenderly and realistically - D is in love with him, but realistically there is no sex as B is not Ôconsenting adultÕ. B doesnt like the hospital and wants to stay with D, they share the bed and cuddle nonsexually. To stay with D more time, B accompanies him at work. As D is called to look for a bomb, B refuses to leave him alone, and when the bomb goes off, B saves his life by pushing D out of the way. They are trapped by rubble in the dark, but B finds the strength to get a flashlight, help D to find a way out and *call* for help even if he is stuttering. The resolution is overswift: D recovers, B goes to speech therapy and they become lovers as B is now phobias-free. C guesses their relationship and assigns them a double flat, even if nobody else is informed. Happily ever after,..."[1]
Reactions and Reviews
This is an unabashed hurt/comfort wallow, one of my favorites in Pros. Bodie has been tortured, badly enough to leave him catatonic for a while, and when he comes out of it, the trauma has left him mute and somewhat fragile. He's only stable when he's around Doyle, who takes it on himself to care for his partner, hoping that one day Bodie will start to recover for real. There's cuddling and hand-holding and all that good stuff, so if you don't like that, you won't like this. But if you're in the mood for a good wallow -- this is the way to go. [2]
"I hope no one here writes under the psued, Ashlea.I just read Out of the Shadows.
Bodie is traumatized so badly, that he briefly goes catatonic. Even when he does start to respond to stimili, he loses the ability to speak, and is frightened of his own shadow. After breaking Bodie out of Repton, Doyle has him move in with him, and takes care of him, and worries when he has to go to work and leave him alone.
None of this bothered me (at least not enough to whine at you guys about it). This paragraph is what bothered me.
Bodie wakes up, and is too scared to walk to the bathroom unless Doyle turns the light on for him. Next morning, B's still asleep. Doyle is looking at him, and
- "You are beautiful," I told him, kissing his face again. "I want
- to make love to you, Bodie...I'm going to look after you. It's
- my fault you ended up in Repton. It should've been me."
- [Bodie sleeps through this.]
This is the first moment that Doyle realizes he wants his partner. Bodie has just gotten to the point of writing messages on a pad...
I don't know why this gagged me, but it does. Hurt/comfort people, am I missing something, does this work for you, but not me? Or does it not work at all."[3]
