Origami Yoda is a children's book series by Tom Angleberger based on the Star Wars franchise. The useage of Star Wars elements was officially granted by Lucasfilm. Because of the series' constant homages to Star Wars, the Origami Yoda series could be considered a transformative work.
Canon
The books revolve around a group of students at the fictional McQuarrie Middle School (named after Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie), in the fictional Lucas County, Virginia. The series begins when Dwight Tharp, a social outcast at the school, creates a finger puppet named "Origami Yoda", which he uses to dispense advice to other students. This prompts another student named Tommy Lomax to to create a case-file to determine whether or not Origami Yoda is channeling the Force to give advice. Dwight inspires other students and staff at the school to create their own Star Wars-themed finger puppets, including Darth Paper, the Fortune Wookie, Art2-D2, Jabba the Puppet, Princess Lablemaker, and Emperor Pickletine.
Fandom
Despite producing relatively little fan content, the Origami Yoda books have garnered something of a cult following. Author Tom Angleberger regularly showcases origami created by fans of the series (known by the fandom nickname "SuperFolders") on his website.
In 2012, SuperFolders Jawa and JC created the "Origami Yoda Expanded Universe", later rebranded to "SuperFolder Central" in 2012 as a hub for Origami Yoda fan-fiction. Along with Origami-Yoda centered stories, the website expanded to other franchises such as Marvel Comics, DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians and more. The website was archived in 2022.
