Summary

From On the Double: "While on patrol, the Enterprise crew finds one of its own under mental attack."

From the Author's Editorial

It has long been our contention that Star Trek has become our modern day mythology. And like Greek mythology, Star Trek begins with heroes. And one hero in particular, James T. Kirk...

Giving an author a forum is sometimes a dangerous thing, but we would like to take this opportunity to thank William Shatner. Not only for the obvious fact of bringing Kirk to life, but also for being the gentleman that he is in "real" life. A new form of bashing seems to have become popular of late, and we take great offense to it. There are many people, both professionals and fan, who seem to feel that William Shatner has been less than the perfect person tat they decide he should be. Many of these people have nursed this grudge, dislike, call if what you will, for years. Mister Shatner, on the other hand, has only continued to be gracious and remain above the fray, refusing to respond or lower himself to their level. To him we say, "Bravo! " And to them, we say, "Get a life!"

Some people seem to forget that before there was any "bloody Enterprise A, B, C, or D," there was Kirk. We need all the heroes we can get.

Excerpt

James Kirk despised feeling helpless. And nothing had the effect of making him feel that way more than waiting outside Sickbay while a member of his crew lay inside, ill or injured. He commanded great power as the captain of a starship but in matters such as these, he was as helpless as a newborn. It did not please him. He looked up as McCoy came through the door, his face grim and expressionless. Kirk stood and walked quickly over to him. "Bones?"

"His life signs are stable though he's still unconscious."

"What the hell happened?"

"I'm not sure, Jim. We're running tests—"

"Don't tell me that, Doctor. I want to know—-"

McCoy's face darkened. "So do I, Captain, sir, but until he wakes up, we're both just going to have to wait."

"I'm sorry, Bones. It's just that having Spock collapse on the bridge without knowing why..."

"Jim,I understand. Really. Now, why don't you go back to the bridge, and let me go back to Spock? When I have anything to report, you'll be the first to know."

Nodding, Kirk turned and headed back to where he could perhaps do more good than cooling his heels in Sickbay.
