Reactions and Reviews
I enjoyed this entire zine, and this is my favorite story in it. It is a unique Mirror perspective on intimacy, plus a good Mirror scenario very nicely fleshed out. Both Mirror characters are written really well, very believable. This is not always easy to do, without making them caricatures. Plus, flawless writing makes a story so enjoyable. I’ve read just about all the Mirror stories over the years, and this one satisfied in a new way. New and realistic details. This is Mirror Spock POV, with his Kirk and the others just returning to their universe. I was fascinated to read that Spock also had a mandate from the Vulcan High Council to destroy the Empire, besides what our Kirk had talked to him about. [I’m using “our” to indicate the known TOS universe.] Exciting and shocking moments: Spock stuns Kirk, McCoy, Scott and Uhura when they first come back. He orders Moreau to not say anything. He removes memories from the others, but beams Kirk to interrogation room. I love being inside this Spock’s head—he’s torn between killing Kirk or using him for Vulcan High Council purposes, and his own. Mirror Kirk is as we saw him, trying to buy Spock with credits, etc. Then...oh boy, an “acceptable” scenario to have Kirk be bound and toyed with by the ravisher Spock. Kirk has to be restrained, while Spock figures out what to do. Kirk resists a meld, but then submits. Spock is looking at Kirk’s experiences in our universe and showing Kirk our people’s experience here. Kirk is impressed—these aren’t weaklings as he’d thought, but strong, resourceful people. Plus he sees the other Kirk and Spock’s close feelings.
Spock groks Kirk’s mind, but doesn’t trust his loyalty. For his purposes, to begin to develop that loyalty in Kirk, Spock needs to link/bond with him, a prospect Spock finds appealing. Really good Mirror Spock thoughts, and Mirror Kirk’s attempts to resist Spock’s plan. But Kirk’s self-interest kicks in, and he’s willing to learn about bonding. Well, bonding has to happen with sex, so...mmm...delicious Mirror sex, with Kirk still restrained. I won’t spell it all out, but it’s really hot, and yet not just everything’s-hunky-dory type sex. There is resistance; and we learn of Mirror Kirk’s abuse when young, etc. But once Kirk capitulates, Spock frees him, and the sex and bonding take place, and...I’d love a sequel—what happens to the Mirror universe once the bonded and powerful Kirk and Spock together take on the Empire.
