Reactions and Reviews

At only four pages this was the shortest story in the zine, but its still enjoyable. It deals basically with Spock making a very unexpected announcement to Kirk which makes him start thinking about their relationship in an entirely new and unexpected way. I must admit that I have not heard of this particular plot device being used for a first time story before. Spock unexpectedly appears in Kirk's quarters and tells him with no preamble at all that he has noticed the Captain's apparent need to give and receive love usually from unsuitable people who end up causing him emotional pain and suggesting that in future when he feels this need he should come to Spock instead. Although initially very surprised, this declaration does make Kirk start thinking of Spock in a very different way. When he confides in McCoy his response is as warm and supportive as we would expect, asking if he has really considered all the implications of such a relationship. As the meeting goes on, we see gradually that Kirk has already made up his mind, and the encounter that follows is a pleasing one, with both men very much in character. In explaining his decision to McCoy, who he catches listening at the door during his meeting with Spock, he admits that he is already "more than halfway" in love with Spock without realising it, so taking their relationship to the next level is just a natural progression and not a problem for him after all. The whole story has a lovely warm glow about it which makes it a pleasure to read. [1]
