one_direction was the first LiveJournal community created for the One Direction fandom. It was created while 1D was still competing on The X Factor. It was a general-purpose fan community for posting anything related to the band, including news, discussion, or fanworks.
As of March 2017, one_direction had 2,804 posts; 64,683 comments; and 6095 members.[1] The community profile statistics have decreased in the years since, possibly due to the mass exodus from LiveJournal in April 2017 when the TOS was changed to comply with Russian law.
A dreamwidth community was created by ilikehumanflesh as an "extension" of the LJ comm in December 2011, but saw very little activity: 14 posts and 27 comments as of 2017.[2]
A related community was created just for posting fanfic in April 2012: one_d_fanwork.
The Fourth Wall
The community had rules specifically intended to safeguard the fourth wall, such as requiring posts to be friendslocked if they contained fanfic or were "too stalkery or too gay/shippy". Also:
Don't break the fourth wall. If we find out that you broke the fourth wall somehow, you'll be banned. I mean, tweeting the boys useless crap is fine obviously. Again, I'm sure you know the difference. For anyone who doesn't know what this is, breaking the fourth wall means linking the boys or anyone associated with the boys to this community, sending them fanfiction, any macros/edits made here, and generally just telling them about what we do in fandom. We don't want to creep them out and we don't want to feel awkward about being the fabulous fans we are. Basically what happens in fandom stays in fandom; don't get the boys or their friends or family involved. In fact, don't send them anything you see on Tumblr either, because ugh. Well, I guess we can't control what you do outside of this comm, but still.[3]
In January 2011, mod ilikehumanflesh set membership to moderated because someone tweeted a link to the community at Liam Payne's friend Andy.[4] The post received 103 comments; everyone seemed to be in agreement that breaking the fourth wall was bad and they did not wish for anyone associated with the band to look at the community. At one point, all posts were locked as well. In June 2012, ilikehumanflesh posted to say that membership and posting would become unmoderated again; ilikehumanflesh cited "paranoia" as well as the Andy incident as the reason for the stricter protocols.[5]

But we're going to open up membership anyway." This is an important mod post., Archived version, by ilikehumanflesh in one_direction, 28 June 2012.
