Of a Linear Circle (OaLC) is a multi-part Harry Potter epic fanfic by Flamethrower. While a student at Hogwarts, a young Severus Snape befriends the portrait of Salazar Slytherin's younger brother, Nizar, an original character who emerges after Harry's mysterious disappearance during what would have been his fifth year. Together, Snape and Nizar must work together to defeat Voldemort, complicated by their developing relationship and Nizar's forgotten past.
The series is frequently praised for its historical accuracy, attention to detail, and re-examining of many of the core assumptions of the Harry Potter universe, such as the role of basilisks and house-elves, the true purpose of Defense Against the Dark Arts, and even the names of spells. Time travel plays an important role with the story, with many installments featuring one or more of the four Hogwarts founders during the Founders Era, who aid the protagonists against Voldemort.
Reactions and Reviews
For anyone wondering, I will from now on accept one (1) harry potter og work and that is Of A Linear Circle series by @deadcatwithaflamethrower, which tears down all the bullshit - classes, racism, sexism, lgbtq+ phobias, slavery, insistence on using children as soldiers, abysmal state of education, addresses the biases and the prejudices, has an amazing researched background and lore and is all around a masterpiece. I have read the whole series five times so far, and given the latest on-goings in the world, I think a sixth comfort-read is imminent. It’s so very long, and oh-so-very worth it.[1]
Flamethrower and 'Of a Linear Circle,' the best time-travel Harry Potter I've ever read. They have an enormous amount of historical research, as part of the work takes place in the Founders' Era of Hogwarts, 990 CE and forwards. It's partly from the POV of Severus Snape, partly from an OC, Nizar Slytherin, the 5-year- younger brother of Salazar Slytherin, and assorted others, including each Founder.[2]
It's rare I don't have one part or another of this in an open tab. Also, very few fics inspire me to write fics of the fic, but this series has done it. Twice. Just gonna... replace Jo's shoddy worldbuilding with this now kthx.[3]
the best 'long fic' for most in-depth research is the series 'Of a Linear Circle by Flamethrower (HP)' she has done so much research on languages, and created whole lore and history for the Hogwarts founders. Part 3 is the best example of her research and dedication to getting it right.[4]
Of a linear circle by flamethrower. I reread it constantly. They do politics better than anyone I've ever read, combined with absolutely mesmerizing depictions of history and fantasy, all held in the Harry Potter universe. I almost universally hated founder fics but this story is the one and only exception.[5]
