Reactions and Reviews

This story begins smack dab in the middle of an emergency. Due to an ill conceived experiment that Spock had objected to, the Enterprise has been flung five hundred light years away from any remotely familiar territory. The only way to get home is through dangerous ―warp slides‖ that have resulted in many deaths among the crew and destruction of essential equipment aboard ship. They now find themselves within Romulan space and Spock must try the dangerous procedure once again to have any hope of returning home. There is an excellent chance Spock will not live through the procedure.

Spock and Kirk have been drawing closer and although they have been approaching the next step in their relationship, nothing has been said verbally between them. Suddenly the two men find themselves out of time for all but a last meld. This is beautifully written. It has a depth and flow that perfectly catches how the characters relate to each other. I love how Anna captures the nuances of their relationship so delicately. They are way past the point where everything must be spelled out between them; they know each other so well. Ironically, I would have liked to hear just a bit more about the circumstances that landed them in this predicament, but I understand the necessity of avoiding the techno-babble. I do like the choices Anna made. It tightens the story and immediately engages the reader‘s interest.

If you haven‘t come across this story yet, I think you‘ll enjoy it. I know I‘m looking forward to reading more of Anna‘s work.[1]

Of Thunder And Roses... takes place during the series and puts Kirk and Spock in a desperate, life-threatening situation. The Enterprise is stuck in uncharted space, suffering high losses and low morale. Even McCoy is at odds with Kirk. The only person to stand by his side and agree with his actions is Spock. To get them home, Kirk must agree to Spock placing himself in the direct line of fire and the two friends say good-bye to one another. Having become unreasonably close over the years, this good-bye consists of secrets shared and desires unmet. Once the danger has passed, the relationship blooms. This is a very well plotted, well executed story that draws the reader through on a string of tension that culminates in the situation resolving itself in the best possible way, with the best possible outcome. I was left with happy, warm, muzzies inside! A story well worth reading. [2]
