Nino Lahiffe is a character in the French children's cartoon Miraculous Ladybug.

Canon background

Nino Lahiffe is a student at the Collège Françoise Dupont along with the other protagonists of the show. A childhood friend of Marinette's, he befriends new students Adrien and Alya and eventually starts dating the latter. He is an aspiring DJ. Over the course of the show, he is repeatedly drawn into the supernatural events affecting Paris.

As a superhero, he uses the Turtle Miraculous to transform into Carapace, and his primary ability is shielding. He is considered backup by Ladybug and doesn't have permanent custody of his Miraculous, instead receiving it from her when she feels his powers are needed. Marinette, Alya, and Adrien all know his secret identity, but he is only aware of Alya's. As a result, he considers Adrien his best friend but dislikes Chat Noir.

Nino has had several Akuma forms. He transformed into the Bubbler out of frustration with Adrien's dad over his refusal to let Adrien have a birthday party, and gained the ability to trap people in bubbles. Later, he was Akumatized as a hero and became Shell Shock, an evil version of Carapace[1]. He and his girlfriend are transformed together into Oblivio, who has memory erasure abilities, after their classmates mock them for playing a childish videogame.[2] Finally, he is transformed into Rocketear after he suspects that Alya was cheating on him with Chat Noir. Even when he is not Carapace or an Akuma, he is usually present for Akumatization incidents involving his classmates and their larger social circle, either by proximity or because Alya is attempting to chase news for the Ladyblog.[1]

Reception and meta

Nino has consistently been one of the more popular supporting characters in Miraculous Ladybug.

Consider the Miraculous that Nino was matched with to become Carapace. Nino is a protector. He is smart, attentive, wise, and stronger than he looks. He is like most protectors: quietly working in the background, doesn't draw attention to himself, and strengthens those who are in battle. Alya didn't see this in him at first but does now and is why she loves him. Alya isn't shallow enough to fall for a cool disk jockey and didn't like Nino at first for that reason. It is only after she got to know Nino that she liked him.

Steadfastly loyal, Nino’s the best sort of friend you could have - at least, Adrien seems to think so! He’s an awesome boyfriend as well, unwilling to abandon Alya, even when the situation seems hopeless, whether it involves zombies or a spider sister. Plus he managed to secretly throw Adrien a raging party in order to make up for Adrien never getting a proper birthday party before (Bubbler didn’t exactly work out), how cool is that?!

Other fans take issue with his lack of development over the course of the series.

Among the main Miraculous holders (the main 7), Nino suffer the most of the lack of focus and development so far as 3 seasons past. Honestly Nino's presence of the show in S3 as just Adrien's best friend and Alya's boyfriend. So as MC, he's the weakest. Thomas promise to explore Nino more in S2 but it's was barely. The addition of Chris wasn't even helping to develop Nino at all unlike with Alya and her twin little sisters..

You guys remember when Marco from svtfoe had those two annoying best friends that disappeared during season 2 because no one liked them? Nino is like that but worse.

I wanted to like Nino Lahiffe, I really did. I *used* to like his relationship with Adrien; I *used* to like his relationship with Alya; I wanted to see him get the focus he "deserved". Even after I wrote the angry post about what he did in Rocketear, I was willing to look past his flaws and willing to change my mind. *Then Illusion happened*

This show has been beating it into everyone's heads that revealing your superhero identity is super mega bad since day one, but Nino apparently didn't get the memo. In the latest (released english dub) episode, Nino reveals his identity AND Alya's identity to Marinette in a cafeteria full of people! Yes Marinette is Ladybug, but Nino dosen't know that! As far as he is aware, Ladybug was forced to reveal his identity to Alya and NO ONE ELSE, and here he is revealing this super secret info to some rando girl at his school!

  • In ML Salt fics, Nino is often characterized as a guilty bystander, and sometimes bashed for it. At other times, he is treated as a part of a trio of Nino, Kim and Marinette as childhood friends, and this relationship is often used as the turning point explanation for why he stands by Marinette.
  • Many fans play up the relationship between Nino and Adrien Agreste, with Nino being the first friend Adrien maed apart from Chloe, and having their friendship be very valuable to them both.

Relationships

The most popular relationships for Nino Lahiffe in fanworks are canonical het ship Nino/Alya and a slash ship, Nino/Adrien. While Nino is occasionally shipped with other members of the cast, including Marinette, Kagami, and Luka, it is uncommon and the ships are considered rarepairs.

Nino/Alya is frequently featured in fanworks as a side pairing alongside some variation of Adrien/Marinette, while Nino/Adrien is more likely to be the main pairing in fanworks that feature it.
