Its Beginning
When first announced in 1979, this zine was listed as "Night Waves/Dark Universe", and described as: "Two great zines in one! Night Waves centers on Dark Shadows and the Occult's most fascinating aspects. Dark Universe focuses on Star Trek and the best of Science Fiction. Two zines, Two Worlds, One Price. $6.00 per year (4 issues).")
The final zine carried only the title "Night Waves", and usually included the zine "Dark Universe" in the last pages. It was not, however, an "Ace Double" type publication where you could flip it over, see a cover for Dark Universe, and read from there. Further, the "Occult" aspect of "Night Waves" quickly became "about 90% Dark Shadows" (from the editorial in #2).
Issue 1
This issue has not been seen, but was probably published in mid to late 1979. The serialized story "Collinwood '74" begins in this issue, as does "My Life As Spock", by Bob Eastman.
Issue 2
Night Waves issue two contains 32 pages (plus covers). It is undated, but internal references imply it was published in January or February of 1980.
The art is by Barbara Fister-Liltz (front cover), Frank Liltz (Dark Universe), and Lucille Staszak (all other internal art). Major content items are:
- From the Editor (2)
- Shadowcon III Convention report (3)
- Collinwood '74, part 2, uncredited fiction (6)
- Barnabas, Willie, and the Transformation, fiction by Lucille Staszak (11)
- Dark Universe fanzine (20-32)

Issue 3
Night Waves Special Edition contains 40 pages (plus covers). It is undated, but internal references imply it was published in June of 1980.
The "Dark Universe" section does not appear in this issue. "Nap Hunter", an author appearing in most issues, is identified here as a contraction of the pseudonym "The Ghost of Napoleon Hunter".
The art is by Barbara Fister-Liltz (front cover) and Lucille Staszak (all other internal art). Major content items are:
- From the Editor (2)
- Will of Iron, fiction by Sandi Willott (4). ("A Women's Libber Moves In On Barnabas Collins!")

Issue 4
Night Waves Issue four contains 36 pages (plus covers). It is undated, but was published in 1981. "Dark Universe" returns this issue, with a new editor. This issue has the sub-title "Spotlight on Cons".
Cover art is by Barbara Fister-Liltz. Interior art is by Barbara Fister-Liltz, Frank Liltz, Cindy Jorgensen, and Lucille Staszak. Several drawings are signed by "Leia-Lyn Steele," which is a pseudonym for Lucille Staszak. 'Steele' is not listed separately in the credits.

The editor of the "Dark Universe" mini-zine in issues 1 and 2, who did not appear in issue 3, has been replaced here by Barbara Fister-Liltz. This entire section was re-imagined as a column of SF movie reviews. This column includes major reviews of "The Shining" and "The Empire Strikes Back", together with mini-reviews of 12 other movies.
Issue 5
The previous issue stated that issue 5 would be released in fall of 1981, but this issue has not been seen.
