NieR: Automata is an action RPG released in 2017 for the PS4, PC and Xbox One. It's a standalone sequel of NieR for the PS3 and follows the stories of androids 2B, 9S, and A2 on a far-future post-apocalyptic Earth.
Fandom
NieR: Automata's characters and their designs have been the biggest draw for the game since its' release. 2B, one of the protagonists, is incredibly popular in circles even outside of the core fandom. Elon Musk infamously posted fanart of 2B on Twitter without crediting the original artist in 2019, causing Elon Musk jokes to become a big part of the fandom and the game to reach more mainstream audiences.
Because of the depressing nature of the game, many fanworks, especially those centered around 2B and 9S, are everybody lives or fix it AUs, where characters are able to live happily together. Fan comics and doujinshi are really popular in the fandom, usually centered around 2B and 9S. A2 is also popular, but not to the extent of 2B and 9S. Fanart and cosplay are also very popular, mostly because of the character's unique designs.
