"Never Look a Gift Elephant in the Mouth" is a short story by fawatson based on Mary Renault's 1953 novel The Charioteer. It takes place shortly after the end of the novel.

Synopsis

Sandy decides that he and Alec must buy Laurie a Christmas present, but it takes much prowling around the shops of Bridstow before he finds something suitable.

Background

The story was written for Brigit’s Flame in Week 2 of January 2013 to the prompt, "Patience". It was also inspired by Greer Watson's "Exit Stage Left, a Wounded Warrior: The Lost Chapters of The Charioteer", and is by way of being a missing scene from that story.

Comments

Comments include the following:

  • "Oh, this is marvellous—not to mention the fact that it completely explains the elephant, which I'd pretty well sucked out of my thumb."—comment by Greer Watson
  • "What a wonderful and unexpected treat! Yes, Greer's Yuletide story certainly was inspirational and heartwarming, and you have carried on in the same vein. I really have re-evaluated Sandy, mainly due to you two, I might add. "—comment by trueriver
  • "Thank you so much for this, it was full of little treasurings, little 'hauntings' of the olde shoppes, and perfectly yummy."—comment by bluegerl
  • "I loved Sandy's tour through the shops. I always feel cheated when people in fiction give each other presents without saying what they are."—comment by hagsrus
