The term mystery work or unrevealed work refers to a fanwork that is in an unrevealed collection on AO3. As the AO3 Collection FAQ states: "All works added to a collection with this setting enabled are hidden from all users except the creator, collection owners and moderators, and Archive site administrators."[1]

How a work in an unrevealed collection appears on AO3.

History and Usage

The unrevealed collection feature was originally added to AO3 to support exchanges that wanted to hide submitted works until the reveal date.[1] However, users also use this feature to hide their works without deleting them from AO3. Any user may create their own collection, add their works to it, and set that collection to unrevealed.
