Melethryn Elfslash Archive was a slash fan fiction archive that hosted stories about elves in the Lord of the Rings fandom.

In 2004, the archive also published its own zine - the Melethryn.

As one recommender commented: "this is the place to go if you want to read all about Elves getting hot and bothered with each other and do so with the same gender."[1]

The archive was founded 25 June 2002. Originally a non-automated site, the archivist eventually migrated the site to eFiction in 2005, though the old nonautomated site remained online, both at the same domain.[2]

As of the site's final Wayback capture in 2009, there were 731 stories by 57 authors.[3]

Submission Guidelines

The submission guidelines were as follows:

All Elfslash stories set in Tolkien's Middle-earth are welcome, with a few noted exceptions. All Elfslash fic (slash fic with at least 1 Elf in the main pairing) may be submitted; the archivist's personal reading preferences are not a factor. I do ask that there be no Elf/Hobbit submissions; it being one of my squicks, I couldn't even format one of those for the site.

Other than that, any pairing is fine. However, no living real person is to be used as a character. No actors from the movie(s) are to be included as characters in fanfic works included here, nor are other real persons. In other words, please don't use your ex-best friend as the archvillian, and don't write yourself or your friends into the story (Mary-Sues).

Original characters (OCs) are allowed, but will not be posted if they drift into the realm of the Mary-Sue. Real life is great inspiration for fiction, but avoiding hurt feelings and libel lawsuits is best for all. (emphasis in original)[4]

After the migration to eFiction, the archivist continued to approve new submissions to the site. As is typical for 2000s Tolkien fanfiction archives, this choice was presented as a means of quality control:

The quality of the fic will remain the same; though it is self-upload, the stories are read over by me before they are accepted, and I have no intention of slacking off on quality-control.[2]
