Melanie King visited the Magnus Institute to give a statement regarding a paranormal experience. In the second season, off-screen, she is shot by a war ghost and infected by the Slaughter. In season three, she starts working in the archives, and tries to kill Elias multiple times. In season four, she is unwillingly operated on by Jonathan Sims to remove the bullet and she rids herself of the Slaughter, and blinds herself to leave the Institute. She moves in with Georgie.

Fanart for Melanie often depicts her as short, thin (which is canon) and pale (usually white or East Asian), with straight black hair often dyed a bright colour. Reflecting her job as a youtuber, sometimes designs have popular tiktok hairstyles such as one half being dyed pink and the other plain. She is often shown wearing a leather or denim jacket. Following the loss of her sight, she is often depicted wearing sunglasses or with a cane.

Most shippy works with Melanie ship her with Georgie, her canon girlfriend. The ship name is "What The Girlfriends" or WTGFs, a play on "What the Ghost", Melanie's youtube channel. There are also rarepairs like Helen/Melanie, Elias/Melanie or Basira/Melanie. WTGFs fanworks often focus on Melanie's exit of the Institute and her recovery, her and Georgie's adventures through the apocalypse world, or AUs relating to her Youtube career. The lack of WTGFs appearance in most of season 5 became something of an ironic joke in the fandom before their appearance.
