Dr. Melanie Babenhauserheide is a German academic.
She received her doctorate from Goethe University Frankfurt. Her 2016 dissertation, Harry Potter und die Widersprüche der Kulturindustrie: Eine ideologiekritische Analyse, was published in 2018.
She discussed her relationship with Harry Potter fandom in a 2018 interview about her dissertation:
Die Reihe ist mir immer mehr ans Herz gewachsen, denn ich habe während der Analyse vieles entdeckt, was ich vorher nicht erwartet hätte. Zudem hat mich die Begeisterung der Fans durchaus angerührt. Ich fühle mich ihnen nun näher als damals, denn mir geht es ja jetzt ein bisschen wie ihnen (oder wie auch der Autorin oder den SchauspielerInnen): Die Reihe hat mich über ein Jahrzehnt begleitet und einige Jahre lang sehr viel Zeit in Anspruch genommen und ich habe mir einen ganz schönen Batzen Fan-Wissen angeeignet. The series has grown ever closer to my heart, because during the analysis I discovered a great deal that I wouldn’t previously have foreseen. I also found myself touched by the enthusiasm of the fans. I feel closer to them now than before, because now I am a little bit like them (or perhaps like the author or the actors): The series has accompanied me over the course of a decade and taken up a lot of my time over some years, and I’ve acquired a whole lot of fan knowledge in the process. I also still enjoy reading Harry Potter fan fiction to see how others continue to tell and rewrite the story. I even listen to wizard rock sometimes.English translation (20 December 2022)
