Megatokyo is a long-running webcomic inspired by Japanese anime, manga, and visual novels.

The comic began as a humorous self-insert featuring characters based on co-authors Fred Gallagher and Rodney Caston traveling to Japan and ending up stranded in Tokyo without the money for a return flight. Over time, the comic moved away from pure humor to incorporate drama and romance elements.

The comic is still available online and has been available in print from Dark Horse Comics since 2004. [1]

Fandom

Megatokyo began in 2000, but reached its highest level of popularity between 2003 and 2006. Co-author Rodney Caston left the project in 2002, which led the comic to move from an episodic, humorous stip-style comic with a lot of gaming references to a plot-heavy narrative that largely referenced visual novels and anime. The change led to something of a schism in the fandoms, with some fans vocally preferring the early comic while others praised the new direction. Megatokyo's website included forums, which were frequented by a wide variety of fans, including many who were not interested in or even aware of the comic itself and many who no longer read it but still kept up with the forums. [2] The forums were also home to a massive and popular forum roleplay known as Megatokyo: The Clans, which was an early forum roleplay experience for many participants.[3]
