In Supernatural fandom, meard, short for "male beard", refers to a male friend whose purpose is to provide misdirection to conceal the "real" secret gay relationship. The term originated on spn_gossip, where a theory was proposed that Misha Collins was set up as the "meard" to help hide the J2 relationship.
