may your path be the sound is a popular Teen Wolf fan fic by magneticwave. It's a Sheriff Finds Out (about werewolves) story from Melissa McCall's POV, and focuses on a developing relationship for Melissa/the Sheriff. It invents a great deal of backstory for Melissa, as well as for Stiles's mom, much of which was Jossed during season 3.
Author's Summary
This may make Melissa a terrible mother, but things were so much easier when Scott and Stiles were unpopular and spent their weekends on either her or John’s couch, playing Mario Kart and talking about all of the stuff they were never going to be cool enough to do. Scott and Stiles’ weekends now mostly involve blood and Derek Hale.

The fic has been read and recced widely, particularly on reclists for Melissa and/or Sheriff-centric stories, and on het-specific reclists. As of 29 July 2014 it has 1,770 kudos on the AO3, making it the most kudosed fic where Melissa/Sheriff is the first pairing tag.[1]
Stiles' dad and Scott's mom make the cutest couple on Teen Wolf - look at the gifsets of their scenes together, they're so ridiculously endearing. Parents are pretty much window dressing for most teen-centric shows though, so we don't get to see them all that much. Luckily, this fic does a great job of fleshing these two characters out (With an additional look at the impact of Stiles' mom on both their lives) and giving them an utterly believable journey towards overcoming their own hurts and finding each other. -smilax's rec post at het-reccers.[2]
Melissa PoV! This was really fantastic. I love the rich backstory you created for Melissa, from her relationships with her family, to her marriage with Steve and of course to her beautiful friendship with Sasha. I teared up at Melissa helping Sasha with all of the letters, for knowing when might be the right time to pass one on to Stiles, and having that bond with John. It made the contents of the final letter that much more special (and so perfect). A great mix of plot and emotion, too, and a perfectly creepy Uncle Peter too! -OnTheTurningAway's review.[3]
Oh my WORD this was AMAZING. I only wish that there were more of it to read! But, I just have to say that I loved all the little tidbits of back story that we got in here and the wonderful friendship that John and Mel have is just so much fun (and Mel is so SASSY - LOVE HER) and bless Mel for her pining and John for being so oblivious (only not really, I bet ;) )...just....just...I wish that there were MORE. Done with feeling and warmth - not just mashing them together because they're two single people of the same age and opposite genders. Mrs. Stilinski given great character as well, and it's nice to see the parents' side of things in a teen TV show.[5]
