The fourth Die Hard film - titled Live Free or Die Hard (or Die Hard 4.0 outside the USA) - was the one film of the series that really captured fannish imagination. This was due in no small part to the buddy pairing of John McClane (Bruce Willis) and Matthew Farrell (Justin Long). Much slash fanfiction ensued.
The relationship tag on AO3 currently lists 588 works.[1] Of the 625 works tagged with the character John McClane, 521 are also tagged with the Farrell/McClane relationship, making this the Die Hard OTP. The second most popular pairing is the canonical Holly Gennaro/John McClane, with 13 works.[2] Competition - even from fan favourite Alan Rickman as villain Hans Gruber in the first Die Hard film - is negligible.[3]
This fannish enthusiasm can be attributed to Bruce Willis and Justin Long's appealing performances, as well as the Buddy Cop Fandom trope. The film leans hard into the latter, with the pair flirting and bickering throughout the film, and growing to utterly rely on each other despite their disparate backgrounds.

- Collide, by Destina (2015). They've never talked about it. Never made contingency plans ... But Matt has always known that if danger threatens, John won't stop until Matt is safe.
