Marceline is truly one of Lovecraft's most complex characters, which is surprising not simply because she is a woman of color, but also because she is in no way based on Lovecraft himself (unlike some of his other 'interesting' characters, such as Wilbur Whateley, Edward Derby and Randolph Carter).

<...> She is... as insane as that might sound, one of the most realistic and compelling characters Lovecraft's ever written - as in, she has a intriguing (if not exactly savory) family history, an actual, interesting job, actual life goals (to be rich, adored, respected and loved) and plausible faults.
