Maid Sama! or Kaichou wa Maid Sama! is a shoujo manga series written by Hiro Fujiwara. It has a 26 episode + OVA anime that ran for 1 season.
The series was met with mixed-to-positive reviews. Many appreciated the humor and chemistry between the characters, but criticized the use of certain characters being used for the sake of convenience, without expanding on their character arcs much.
Despite this criticism, the manga and anime remain quite popular in the shoujo genre, noting Misaki's character as a portrayal of a "strong" woman, in comparison to meek, almost helpless shoujo protagonists, who need their love interest to save them.
Canon Overview
Ayuzawa Misaki is a high school student who was forced to attend the run-down Seika High, a former boys-only high school turned co-ed school, as her family is too poor to afford a better school. It is revealed that her father left her family, comprised of her sickly mother and younger sister, in huge debt, thereby forcing them to work and pay it off.
In an attempt to make the best of her situation, Misaki works hard and gains the trust of her teachers to become the Student Council President so that she can make Seika High a better and safer place for the girls. Unfortunately, since the Seika High student population is primarily male, she needs to portray a harsh, 'demonic' exterior, to get them to take her seriously. This male-hating behavior of hers earns her the nickname "Demon Prez".
Since she needs to help her mother pay off her father's debt, she chooses to work as a waitress in a Maid Cafe called Maid Latte, as it has a higher pay. Since this job requires her to be kind, compassionate and subservient, which is in stark contrast with her persona at school, she keeps it a secret.
It is on one such day when she steps outside for a break that her secret is discovered by Usui Takumi, the resident heart-throb of Seika High. In an attempt to get him to keep her secret, she tells him about her circumstances. On a later date, Takumi reveals that he kept her secret because he finds her "amusing".
The series follows Misaki and Takumi as they navigate school life and their feelings for each other, as various challenges come their way.
