What about Wintershock as a pairing appeals to you?
First of all, Darcy Lewis is my favorite character in the MCU because she’s so easy to write. Writers know just enough about her from the movies and comics to create our own backstory for whatever plot bunny is crowding our brain. That diversity makes it easy to pair her with anyone.
The appeal of Darcy with our beloved James “Bucky” Barnes is that she strikes me as the female version of him pre-WWII. Come on, they’re both fun, sassy brunettes who don’t take shit from anyone, yet will thrown themselves in crazy situations without second thought to save their best friend!
When Darcy and Bucky are paired in a story, she can be the person who helps him heal and be a person again. She can be the one to get him out of his self-loathing. She can tap into fun and flirty Bucky. She can also bring out his protective instincts, his “God, I found the female version of Steve” thinking. From grumpy and angsty to flirty and fun, Darcy and Bucky are adorable.
How did you first encounter the pairing?
A Clint and Darcy story was my first foray into the Darcy Lewis fandom and I have a special place in my heart for them. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough TaserHawk stories (I blame Age of Ultron and Clint’s secret family) so I jumped into the rabbit hole and got swept up in the whole Shieldshock fandom. Some of those stories featured a triad with Bucky and these remain my favorite. However, sometimes it’s nice to have a not-so-crazy pairing of just two people and I think I’ve already established why I love Wintershock – if you can call the intern and former assassin not-so-crazy.
Do you have any specific Wintershock headcanons?
Nothing concrete; it depends on the story. I guess Darcy taking care of Bucky is my main one, whether it’s making sure he eats right or has his injuries seen to after a mission, or reminding him that what he did as the Winter Soldier isn’t his fault because of what Hydra did to him. She very much can be a Mama Bear with Bucky. She can also be a little shit who gives just as good as she gets. Again, it depends on the story. Personally, I prefer those where Bucky is pretty much over the self-loathing and we can get to the good stuff.
