Lux-Pain was a 2008 visual novel game for the Nintendo DS. It had no significant fandom following in Japan, but achieved some notoriety among English reviewers for a localization that has been described as "wonky"[1] and an "all-time disaster job"[2]. The game has minor dating sim elements and allows the player to receive messages after the game depending on how close they have become to certain characters. Only the messages from female characters will be explicitly romantic. However, M/M ships are popular on AO3 due to certain male characters becoming very close to the main character.

Fandom

The game was a critical failure in the US, and developer Killaware filed for bankruptcy in 2011, leaving the property adrift and English-speaking fans with only the poorly-translated official localization. Because of the scarcity of canon material like the artbook and soundtrack that came bundled with the now out-of-print game, current fan activity often centers around trying to preserve the canon itself. There have been several attempts to retranslate the game, but none have yet been completed. There are two ongoing text-only retranslation projects on Tumblr, at Redux-Pain and Lux Pain Project.
