Long Johns, or Swimmer, is a Brooklyn newsboy in Newsies.

Name
The name Swimmer was given to the character by Newsies fans on the site The Happy Newsie Minivan, probably in 2001 or earlier. They joked that he was previously known by fans as "the hot Brooklynite who climbs out of the water."[1]
Unaffiliated fans on Tumblr later assigned him the name Long Johns in probably 2020.[2] It came from a pun in a fan group chat.[3] This may have been the Bryan Denton Worshippers chat.[4] His name begins appearing online in September 2020, but there may have been earlier posts.[5]
