Reactions and Reviews
1996
A short wonderful story told beautifully with spare dialogue. It takes place after Kirk and Spock have been on the Enterprise for ten years. There's a ceremony to end their mission and afterwards Kirk goes to a bar and gets drunk. They return to their hotel and Kirk pleads with Spock not to leave. But done with this wonderful and simple dialogue that just feeds the imagination and makes the scene come alive. So moving and poignant. Amazing without lots of adjectives and adverbs! The only drawback is that it really could have been a lot longer, but what is here is really heart-tugging.
"Then he felt Spock s arms go around him. 'Jim don't please...' But he couldn't even talk. He turned around and clutched at Spock who held him tightly. 'It will be all right Jim. Everything will be all right.'"
The ending is actually uplifting despite its sadness. Really beautiful. [1]
