Excerpt

"I know I'm being emotional about the whole thing. I want Spock's view of the situation... before I make any moves." McCoy grinned. "I'm still right about you two." "What now?" "You're too intertwined to work at top form on your own. Either of you..." "You are nuts." "Bet?"

Reactions and Reviews

Starfleet Command decides that the command officers should no longer lead landing parties, but rather "FCT's" (First Contact Team) made up of first officers and others. Kirk, of course, is greatly opposed to this new policy and becomes a bear on the ship while Spock is at "FCT" school. There's a lengthy talking scene with McCoy where they discuss Kirk's behavior and Spock and FCTs. I would have greatly preferred all this information to have been put into some action instead of such a static scene. Then Spock returns to the Enterprise and he and Kirk talk some more. Kirk contends that command teams who are personally involved in some way make better teams. Then they kiss and then talk some more.

But during the last few pages, there's some really lovely moments. They make love in a much too brief, far-reaching scene with one sentence where there should have been pages. But some neat, romantic language and descriptions like: "He climaxed with an inhuman cry, poignant enough to make the stars weep, savage enough to wake the solar winds, seductive enough to bring Spock over the brink, right behind him."

And this beautiful line: "The minute thrumming of the warp engine passed through the deck up through the bunk and on into Spock's body, comforting him with the familiar knowledge that all was well with his world." I especially enjoyed Kirk asking Spock to make love to him and Spock answering, "Yes, Jim." [1]

Starfleet's newly implanted contact teams have been a success eveywhere in the fleet, except on the Enterprise. With his first officer sent away for training, a stressed Kirk 's been putting everyone on edge on the ship. It will take a discussion with Bones, then with Spock, to understand why everything felt so wrong lately... Love how it addresses and tries to explain Kirk beaming down with all the landing parties and how he and Spock realize their feelings as conversation unfolds. [2]
