Le Jardin du Luxembourg was Ursula's Les Misérables fansite and multi-author archive.
The site was a member of several webrings, including the Enjolras webring, Les Misérables Fan Fiction Ring, Les Amis Webring, LesMis Ring, and You Know NOTHING of Javert![1][2]
The site name comes from the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, France, which are featured prominently in the Les Misérables novel as the place where Marius and Cosette first meet.
It was last updated on August 29, 2002.
Site History
The site was founded by Ursula, an American high-school student,[3] on GeoCities by April 1999. Ursula writes of choosing the name: "Le Jardin du Luxembourg is the garden where Marius and Cosette meet for the first time.... This is not a Marius and Cosette website. I just thought the web already had a few excellent 'barricade' sites, and I wanted to try something different."[4]
It moved to altern.org by early 2000 and shortly thereafter to TBNS.net, when Altern was forced to cease free webhosting following a lawsuit and new legislation in France.
The site was revamped and "Le Jardin du Luxembourg 2.0" went online on July 17, 2000.[5] It moved again less than a year later because of TBNS's intrusive ad content, this time to Frenchboys.net, a Les Mis domain started by Ursula and Manon.
Le Jardin du Luxembourg was last updated on August 29, 2002, with the note that "it could be quite some time before this site is updated again."[6] It was taken offline in February or March 2003.
The site was left online at TBNS.net although the main page pointed to Frenchboys.net and the navigation menu was removed. Content could be access through direct links until TBNS.net went offline around mid-2019.[7]
Fanworks
Fanfiction was divided into the categories "Multi-Part Stories", "Stand-Alone Stories", "Sillyfic", and "Poems & Songs".
