land comm is apparently the term that won to describe communities where you join, and you're formed into teams, and there are challenges issues on themes, and people on the team produce works to fill the theme (sometimes fic challenges, sometimes graphics challenges), and the most points win. It can be multiple fandoms, or just one.[1]
Landcomm is just a term from way back on livejournal from when there were a lot of these types of comms and they were all named "XYZ_Land" like "Stargate_Land," "Liars_Land," "SleepyHollowLand," etc, so they just all got lumped together as "landcomms."[2]
The whedonland livejournal (created in June 2009) claims to be "the original land comm"[3] so may be where the name comes from. A similar concept lies behind earlier team challenges, such as the Snarry Games.
