Lee has always had a real talent for giving voice to snarky, bitchy, and flawed yet likable protagonists, so it’s really no surprise that her version of Loki was spot on. She does a very good job of balancing the complexities of his personality, both the megalomaniac side, and the side that has been emotionally warped by his family life and the ways that his father and brother have failed him.

This was just another read that did absolutely nothing for me. I really wanted to like this, because I am a huge Marvel fan, and I love the Marvel version of Loki. And this book had it’s advantages, but overall, it did not do much for me, and moreover, I did not really like Loki’s character in this. I think he was given really little agency, which I wasn’t keen on, plus this was really poorly paced, which is an issue I have with all of Lee’s books.

If you haven’t read Loki Where Mischief lies, and your a fan of Loki, you haven’t lived. The book is fast paced, humorous, adventure and romance. I could write a persuasive essay on why you should read it but that would be a long post lol. Anyway enjoy and have a happy new year🎉

yeah thor might have done the whole “banished to midgard and finds mortal lover who aids his journey” thing pretty well, but loki did it first and he did it gayer so who’s the real winner here

So, for anyone who’s disappointed in the Loki show on Dinsey+, I recommend reading the book “Loki: Where Mischief Lies” by Mackenzi Lee. I just started it, but it’s really well written, and Loki’s characterization is pitch-perfect. Loki actually feels like Loki, for one thing, which is already a massive improvement over that show. So far, it’s a wonderfully nuanced and sympathetic portrait. Definitely go and pick up a copy to read. If for nothing else, then to remind yourself of what Loki is SUPPOSED to be like.

after reading where mischief lies (and hurting over loki and theo) the first thing my mind jumped to was that quote from thor: the dark world when loki warns thor about how he would “never be ready” for the day jane would die because she was a human and her life would be a glimpse next to the thousands of years of an asgardian’s life expectancy. and the fact that he said that like he knew the feeling of “never being ready”.

so my new headcanon is that loki kept a secret eye on theo or maybe asked heimdall to keep him updated. and despite the fact he had tried to prepare himself for it, the day theo died loki still wasn’t ready.

once again, i like to make myself sad, what about it?

I’ve loved Loki from Marvel the second I knew he existed…but for a long time I let that love fall to the side because no one else I knew loved him as deeply. However, when I read Lee’s book I saw the Loki I loved most reflected on the pages. Lee just got everything I wanted to see in Loki and I was stunned. I’d love to go in unexpecting again and be pleasantly surprised.
