When Bodie is almost killed on an op, a furious and frightened Doyle realises their affair has become more than just sex. In HG's hands, this familiar story gets a nice, if not extensive, treatment. I have a particular liking for what I call "emotional first-times". Rather than the first time they have sex, these stories mark the point where one or both of them come to understand the depth of their feelings, have an emotional epiphany. This story is only four-and-a-half pages long, but it's a pleasant read.[1]
