Kirk On a White Bed (aka "Spock at Gol") is an illo by Shelley Butler.
It was printed in T'hy'la #19.
From the Artist
I knew exactly what I wanted to say in it—just what you saw — Kirk’s utter despair of his separation from Spock. I don’t have such a clear vision every time—sometimes the piece evolves from the process of drawing it. I think the same thing happens in writing—where you think the story is going one way, but Kirk and Spock refuse to cooperate! [1]
This has had many different titles, but it’s subtitled: “Spock At Gol,” which I love, but the only problem is that it’s too confusing to people who expect to see an image of Spock. But we know what it means, don’t we? I loved drawing Kirk’s feet around the bedclothes.[2]
Bumping Up Against the Fourth Wall
It was personally shown to Shatner at the October 1997 Creation Con in San Diego:
Shelley stalled for time as she fussed with her portfolio, then displayed a print of Kirk sitting in the white bed. "I draw very provocative drawings of you," she said. "I see that you do," he said.[3]
William Shatner signed the PMT (master print) of this. He liked it! [4]
