Reactions and Reviews
Voting for only three stories in the zine was difficult, with so many interesting and well written stories to choose from. ―Kirk‘s Toy‖ was a very enjoyable story written by one of my favorite online authors. In it, Kirk is chastising himself after a mission for doing the right thing for what he thinks was the wrong reason. While on the mission, aliens ambushed Kirk and Spock, and captured Spock. Kirk hid, and waited for his chance to rescue Spock despite seemingly impossible odds of success. Kirk watched in horror as the alien leader Haidux accuses Spock of being Kirk‘s whore, and following his commands in the bedroom as well as on the ship. Haidux brutally kisses Spock, then makes it clear he plans to rape him. Kirk rescued Spock from the aliens, but feels he lost control and did it for the wrong reasons because he was blinded by anger and his feelings for Spock. I loved the whole part where Kirk talks about how the one thing that he and Spock have in common is control. As the captain, and as a Vulcan, both are supposed to be in control at all times. Spock tells Kirk that Haidux had been right in that Spock would follow Kirk‘s orders anywhere, and then Spock decides not to maintain his Vulcan controls: ―He walked back to Kirk, looked down at him, and finally took the human‘s face in his hands. ―You say that I cannot understand what is in your heart,‖ he said, very quietly. ―But I knew you were there—and I knew that you would save me. The odds were irrelevant.‖ He bent down to the stunned human and kissed him softly on the lips.
I‘m so glad Jesmihr entered the contest, and I loved her story. [1]
This story was originally written for the 2004 KiScon zine. Stories submitted for the zine needed to include one of three words—toy, bucolic, or cutthroat. Kirk rescues Spock, but afterwards fears he did the right thing for the wrong reason. With wonderful exchanges between Kirk and Spock, this is a great first time story. And I love Kirk‘s reaction when Spock kisses him. [2]
