Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, or Kare Kano for short, is a shoujo manga and anime series. It begins as a lighthearted romance and later covers more intense and dramatic subject matter while exploring the history of the male lead. The series was published in English by Tokyopop as "His And Her Circumstances".

It has been suggested [1] that the series' official title in English is a mistranslation by Tokyopop, and that "Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou" is more accurately translated as "The Situation of Being Boyfriend and Girlfriend".

Reception

The anime covers only part of the manga, and the latter half of the manga has been criticized for being overly edgy and for its uncritical depiction of age gap relationships between minors and adults, among other content. In particular, the very end of the manga suggests that a good friend of the main couple is the destined romantic partner of their high school-aged daughter, whom he's raised as essentially a third parent. This development is almost universally despised by English-language reviewers.
