Kaffyrutsky is a fanfiction writer active in the Doctor Who fandom during the 1990s and 2000s.

I write non-fiction for a living, but wrote fiction years ago. I picked it up again in late 2006, inspired by the rebooted BBC series Doctor Who. I was always a fan of the show, but grew to love it because of Russell T. Davies and the Ninth Doctor, and I decided to dip my toe in the fanfic water. Davies gave way to Moffat, I fell in love with his universe even more with the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors, and stayed in the water. I still love the Whoniverse, I adore the Thirteenth Doctor, and am awaiting the Fifteenth with glee.

I write largely in the Whoniverse*, especially the 9th, 11th, 12th, and 13th. I love Nine/Jack/Rose as an OT3. However, I love nearly every character and Doctor in the Whoniverse. I like or love most Companions, from Ian & Barbara to Amy, Rory, River (River is awesome, my friends), Clara, Bill, Yaz, Graham, Ryan, and Dan (so many neat Companions!) I like the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood sections of the Whoniverse, and ... that's about it. I welcome reviews, criticisms and questions. I'm an old editor, so I've occasionally been helpful to other writers in that way.

Other stuff? Grey hair that used to be red, married with lovely husband and grown son; rock and roller, Fourth-Estater, believer in Democracy, loyal member of skiffy fandom.

Coming to this oh, so late, to say “What she said.” Fanfic was what coaxed me back into writing fiction. I’ve spent a lifetime writing nonfiction for a living, and my early attempts at writing original fiction in F&SF, my chosen niche, had withered and died, leaving typewritten corpses in old boxes of carbon paper … and then the Internet happened, and I discovered online communities (TWoP and RASFF of blessed memory being only two of them), and then Doctor Who got rebooted, and all those factors lured me back into writing fiction.

Well over a decade later, I’ve written more than 100 pieces of fic and meta, from drabble to novel length, in several different fandoms, and I am very happy that I’ve had the chance to do so. I still haven’t returned to writing original fiction, a decision with which I’m quite comfortable, but I have become a much better writer (of fiction and nonfiction) than I was at the beginning of the journey. My creative urges are served, and I try to treat the characters I borrow with respect. Seeing fanfic treated with at least a modicum of the same respect makes me happy as well. Thank you for writing this.
