...is not just another cave scenario. It's quite different, actually, because Kirk is pretty well laid up after a shuttle crash and Spock senses it's time for a confession. Their narrow escape prompts him to admit to Kirk not only that he loves him, but that he also desires him. Much to the credit of the Author, nothing happens there in the cold and the dirt with water dripping on them from the ceiling and bats screaming past their entangled bodies. Yech. This is a very civilized Author who has expressed herself cleverly, not cutesy or humorous, just right-on in some way I can't define. For instance, recovering in sickbay, Kirk can't figure out how Bones always knows when Spock has recently visited. "The extra pillow is across your lap," he confesses. "It's always there just after a visit from our tall, dark and handsome Vulcan." When Kirk's confinement finally ends, the long-anticipated Event takes place and it's a fine bit o' lovin'—in a nice clean bed without a rock in sight (not that everything's soft and mushy...). Sorry, K/S overload makes me silly!
