The name John Gillnitz is an amalgamation of the Carterverse scriptwriter names John Shiban, Vince Gilligan and Frank Spotnitz and appears repeatedly throughout The X-Files.

The name was invented by X-Files visual effects supervisor Mat Beck, who wrote the script for the episode Wetwired, in which "John Gillnitz" was mentioned for the first time.

All subsequent episodes in which a "John Gillnitz" appears were written by Shiban, Gilligan and Spotnitz, except for the second X-Files video game Resist or Serve, which was penned by Thomas Schnauz and which is considered as three "lost episodes".

The script for Memento Mori is referred to in fandom as the "John Gillnitz script" since all 4 writers received writing credits for it.
