Eric Staal was the captain of the Carolina Hurricanes from 2010 - 2015. He's won a Stanley Cup, a World Championship, and an Olympics gold medal, which makes him one of few active hockey players who is a member of the Triple Gold Club. He holds multiple franchise records. Eric was traded to the Buffalo Sabres on September 16, 2020 after spending time on the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild.[1]
Jeff Skinner was drafted by the Hurricanes in 2010 and won the Calder Trophy in his first season. Eric Staal took him under his wing early on. Jeff was traded to the Buffalo Sabres on August 2, 2018.[2]They were briefly reunited again in 2020 when Staal was signed to the Sabers.

Eric's obvious fondness for Jeff and Jeff's obvious hero worship soon translated into many fics. As impertinence put it in her primer: "Basically, the door is wide, wide open for tons of porn where EStaal angsts about the age difference and Jeff is wide-eyed and worried Eric doesn't like him. This pairing needs ALL of the devirginizing and screwed up power dynamics and ridiculously sweet makeouts."[3]
Eric Staal/Jeff Skinner RPF first peaked in 2012, during which it was one of the most popular pairings under the Men's Hockey RPF tag on AO3. The Canes' trade of Eric Staal to the Rangers in 2016 had a dramatic impact on the quantity of works being published.
There was a small resurgence in the popularity of Eric Staal/Jeff Skinner RPF in fall of 2020 after Eric Staal joined Jeff Skinner on the Buffalo Sabres.
