Japanese-Korean Yuri (日韓百合) was an art meme that sprang up in August 2024 following a series tweets from Japanese and Korean women warning each other about dating men from their respective countries. Within this conversation a user quote-tweeted saying "the only option left is for Japanese and Korean women to date each other"[1] leading to artists drawing Japanese/Korean woman yuri.
The Korean woman was typically drawn with black hair and shown as cool and confident, while the Japanese woman was drawn with brown hair and shown to be more nervous and shy. This was partly inspired by additions popular tweets to come out of this trend where Japanese women shared stories of dates and encounters they'd had with Korean women, one of which said "When I went on a date with a Korean girl, I wore a miniskirt and she took off her jacket and draped it over her lap."[2] This scene in particular was drawn by many artists afterwards, and quote-tweets featuring a rabbit holding a rose in its mouth lead to a subtrend of drawing where the Korean woman gave the Japanese woman roses.[3]
As the meme grew more popular it expanded to include other East Asian countries.
