International Standard Book Number

International Standard Book Number, also known as ISBN, is a tracking number issued by Bowker for books in publication in the U.S. Each edition is expected to have a separate number, which has led to complicated issues with ebook publishing; books that are not published through "mainstream" publishers, including ebooks published through Amazon, may not have ISBNs.

Fanfiction on archive sites almost never has an ISBN which is one way fans have sussed out what is a fanwork and what is a pro-work.
