Interlude is a K/S story by Ida Vega.

It was published in the print zine As I Do Thee #21.

Summary

"A slightly A/U story! On Tarsus IV, a young Jim Kirk meets and falls in love with a gifted Vulcan musician. After a brief time together, Kirk is unexpectedly called away... only to return to Tarsus seven years later as captain of the USS ENTERPRISE at the request of the Vulcan ambassador to help rescue as many non-Tarsians, including his musician son, from the planet as possible before Governor Kodos can put them all to death."

Reactions and Reviews

1994

Lieutenant Kirk is befriended by Dr. McCoy on the USS Farragut and they attend a concert given by Spock, who in this A/U story is a gifted musician called, appropriately enough, the Gifted One.

Excellent descriptive moment as Spock, upon meeting Kirk for the first time, suddenly finds his collar too tight. Kirk's "eyes lingered on his exposed throat...". So Victorian romantic! Neat.

In addition are some lovely scenes during and after their meeting that were filled with personal and romantic thoughts. I also appreciated the reference to Spock's first pon farr as not due for 7 more years after his present age of 28, as attributed to the much longer Vulcan life-span.

However, throughout the story was the confusing use of the title "Gifted One" and Spock's name. They were used randomly, for no apparent reason each time and it became a major distraction. Once he is known to us and to Kirk as "Spock", calling him "The Gifted One" again for no reason (he's seen by another character or an audience, for example) makes no sense.

What a lovely scene of Kirk going to Spock's hotel suite for a midnight supper. I admit I wanted Kirk to be the main course, but instead it was "cut to the crashing waves on the rocks". Seriously, this should have been detailed as it's the first time they make love and is integral to the story.

There's a very exciting rescue sequence and some good action scenes complete with hair-raising escape, phaser fire and killings. But an encounter with Gary Mitchell was thrown in unexpectedly with absolutely no build-up or even some hints. The scene itself is fine, but it came out of nowhere.

I enjoyed the bittersweet and unusual ending. [1]
