Some Excerpts
Thankfully, the very worst of what I've written has never seen the light of day, at least I hope it hasn't. However, there was an early Xena story that was never finished that I posted what I had to a list. The story just sucked. It had some interesting ideas, but I didn't know where I was going with it, and a character bordered a little too much on a Mary Sue. It has since been consigned to the depths of discarded things on my backup CDs and I no longer remember the title.
I've written since I was old enough to start stringing words together. I have written quite a bit of original stuff over the years and fan fiction. But one of the first stories I remember starting was a Star Wars novel. And aside from the randomly shifting tenses, a hopeless Mary Sue character, and some punctuation errors it, um, sucks.
[Biggest problem in fan fiction] seems to vary by fandom, Affected, I guess, by who that show appeals to. But, if I had to pick one over-arcing problem I'd probably go with out-of-character characters, since if you keep the characters in line with what you've been shown, it will usually substantially curtail many other problems.
