Inscryption is a rogue-like deck-building video game in which players primarily compete in card matches to defeat the other characters. The game incorporates elements of horror, metafiction, and escape room dynamics. The game has fairly extensive lore, with many secrets, including ARGs, indicating towards it.

Due to the nature of the gameplay and the prominence of the cards as a mechanic, fan-made cards and even full attempts at recreating the game itself have been created alongside the more typical forms of fanworks.[1]

There are over 600 Inscryption fics on Ao3. Reader-Insert is popular thanks to the very meta, fourth-wall breaking nature of the game. Some reader-insert fic is explicitly tagged "Reader Is Not Luke Carder" to differentiate, as the video game does insinuate that the player perspective is through Luke's eyes.
