Independence Day is a 1996 American epic science fiction disaster film.

On June 22, 2015, Emmerich announced the official title for the sequel: Independence Day: Resurgence which is set to be released on June 24, 2016.

Canon

The aliens are coming and their goal is to invade and destroy Earth. Fighting superior technology, mankind's best weapon is the will to survive.

Fandom

The fandom on tumblr grew after the 2016 sequel film, Resurgence, including multiple creators publishing fics which were cross posted to AO3 and a rise in the creation of fanart. There was an interest in the relationship between Milton Isaacs and Brackish Okun, revealed to be canon in this film and explored more in the tie-in books.
