Synopsis
Ralph and Laurie cope with Alec, who is stricken when his lover is killed in an air raid.
Background
"In This Unsheltered Place" was written for the Valentine's Day Challenge 2012 on maryrenaultfics. It is the prequel to her previous story, "Quite a Party", and chronologically first in the series.
Comments
The story elicited a number of comments, including the following:
- "There is a tremendous sense of controlled precision in this fic, a nearly taciturn restraint: yet it is interesting how your words mold around the characters in their individual streaks-- words for Laurie float in feigning and smoke and different bits of movement and (some) sentiment. [...] This episode reads like a forgotten snachet of the original manuscript. Everything works in the way Renault would have wanted to work it, no loose strings to get tangled in."—comment by bee_muse
