In Fire, In Ice was a very popular Alex Russo/Justin Russo fic by moirariordan before it was removed/deleted. It was often recced, especially for newbies or for those who weren't sure about shipping Justin and Alex together.

Comments & Reviews

A new and tragic perspective on the lives of the Russo family. One of the most touching stories ever written in the WOWP fandom, a sad story, but an outstanding work of art and imagination at the same time. Probably one of the best, if not the best fanfic in the history of Jalex.[1]

Seconded. This story is probably the most influential story in the Jalex fandom, and should be tagged as a required read for anyone remotely interested in the pairing. If you're iffy on whether or not to ship 'Jalex', start with this. Your mind will be made up shortly.[2]

It's not just good as a shipping fic and a Jalex fic, but this troper also really enjoyed it just as a look at the psychological effects of being the victim of that, especially in the early chapters, when the author shows the isolation and paranoia of the situation.[3]

If you ask a WoWP-fan for only one rec I’m sure 8 of 10 will give you a link to this fanfiction. Why? Because it’s simply perfect. Heartbreaking and realistic, but still perfect.

No joke. This is one of the few fanfics which I read and re-read and re-read.

The fic takes place in a world where the secret of the magic world is revealed and it starts with one simple question. How would the mankind reaction? Acceptance or fear? Is our world really so accepting?

moirariordan shows the reader a world where humans struggle to accept magic. It's a world where history repeats itself, where families get separate and friends turn to enemies. In the end Justin and Alex only have each other during their struggle to survive. Their search for a save place is heartbreaking and even if you have problems with the fact that Justin and Alex are brother and sister try to read the fic. The way moirariordan writes their relationship is so realistic and natural that there is no other possible outcome for them.

Also the ending is beautiful. A little bit sad, but also hopeful. It's no fairytale end but a real world end and this is nothing more than Justin and Alex wished for.[4]

This story takes the assumption that wizards live in secret fort their own good, and kind of spins with it. It imagines a world where everyday people are informed of magic and go on a modern day witch-hunt, complete with shiny new weapons to prosecute with. It uses this genocide of sorts to either strengthen or weaken the relationships between families, and Justin and Alex start working for an underground railroad, helping people of magical descent get to safe places and new identities, to hide them. One of the best fanworks I've ever read, without a doubt. It also gets around that tricky incest thing creatively.[5]
