Reactions and Reviews

1992

I found this thoroughly amusing story to be just the right length. I sailed as I read it. Although I didn't quite catch Saavik's motivations, I didn't care, for the other characterizations, of Stonn and T'Pring, and especially Sarek, were beguiling. And I loved the line. "We left that night, me driving Spock's Ford. 'So I can look at you.' he said." Can you just imagine Spock behind the wheel of a Ford?

I thought the description on page seven of the arrangement of the rooms on the second floor was unnecessary. It completely pulled me out of the flow of the story. 1 actually took out a pencil and diagrammed the arrangement on the margin. thinking it was surely an important element of the plot!

I wish there had been some sort of additional framing device to tie in with the story's title. I felt a little cheated when I realized I wasn't going to get to see Kirk dreaming all of this fluff up. Was Spock there too, sharing it with him? [1]

A nice idea. Kirk as a private eye. I like the plain narrative style in the first person -- like an old fashioned detective story.[2]

The idea of a holodeck in original Trek times is of course appealing, but this could have been simply an A/U story without reference to the holodeck, since it was only referred to in the title. I quite enjoyed the scenario -- pleasantly implausible.

Good pace: crisp, no-nonsense style. Perfect for a poor, tough dick story. Some was charmingly tongue-in- cheek. Nice sex, raw and real and loving. Good intrigue. Great that "Savak" loved Spock but was only trying to bring him and Kirk together. Stonn's nefariousness well done. Really loved the story; quite a pleasure to read. [3]

From the first line to the last, I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful story. This mix of 1940's Sam Spade and The Next Gen episode "The Big Goodbye" was clever and unique. I especially liked the first scene in Kirk's office as he ruminates about the good-iooking brunette that got away when said brunette, Spock, walks in the door.

Since I can't for the life of me write humor, my hat's off to those who can, and Karla can. With a vengeance! Because the Stonn question wasn't fully resolved by the story's end, I'm hopeful this was a set-up for further sequels.

I sailed when I thought of this story for days afterward. Thanks. Karla! [4]

This is one of Ms. Kelly's really good stories. It's an a/u where Kirk is a private detective, sent to investigate a murder attempt on Spock, the son of a wealth syndicate boss. Seems Kirk and Spock have known each other (in the Biblical sense) before. The author has the hard-boiled style down pat. The story is also a real murder mystery with red herrings and the person you least suspect doing it. And it's funny. I don't ask any more of a story than this.[5]
