Reactions and Reviews
1989
This one has a wonderful female viewpoint character, and it's got some very nice philosophy, but the philosophy is presented as a lecture rather than being made an integral part of the plot. Zoey also displays ignorance of meditation practice. We are expected to believe that Spock's meditation of almost two and a half hours is an especially long period to meditate. Even if you're talking about human practice of meditation, that isn't a very remarkable length of session for someone who's experienced. Not only is Spock supposed to be experienced in meditation, but he has Vulcan discipline and endurance. Therefore he should be able to out-meditate humans. This may seem like a small detail to some, but it's the background details that lend verisimilitude to a story. [1]
