Ice Adolescence was a movie planned by MAPPA (the production company) after the runaway success of the Yuri on Ice anime about the character Victor’s backstory. It was announced in April 2017, but news from the company after that point was extremely limited, with only a teaser being released in 2020 before the project was officially cancelled on April 18, 2024.[1][2]

Hype / response / fanworks pre-cancellation

Yuri on Ice had a huge impact on fandom and was extremely beloved globally.

Teaser Release

The teaser was first aired in 2018 but uploaded online in 2020. The comments on the video are in many languages and spiked after release as well as on cancellation.

In a funny but also sad moment of foreshadowing, Duolingo, the language app, made a 1.5 minute April Fools video about "Duo on Ice", a new skating show they would pioneer - with the accompanying tweet as follows:

this is the closest we'll get to a yuri on ice movie

Ice Adolescence Cancellation

Fandom reaction to the cancellation was immediately mournful and upset, despite many believing the movie would not be made already. Many previously lapsed fans came back to comment on the cancellation, causing the tags 'Yuri on Ice' and 'Ice Adolescence' to trend on Tumblr and Twitter on April 19, 2024 (and longer in some parts of the world). The cancellation post on twitter in particular had extremely high reach and reactions[3] with over 4.8k comments/replies/qrts as of April 22nd 2024.

Many fans expressing a belief that production studio MAPPA had cancelled it to focus on Jujutsu Kaisen or Chainsaw Man,[4]. Others suggest real life events such as the Russian doping scandal and invasion of Ukraine had forced the cancellation. Even more fans suggest that it might be due to homophobia and censorship concerns[5].

Misinformation and rumors abound. One unverified claim is that the show actually entered the post production phase[6], and other fans express hope that the IP might be picked up by another company and the movie might get made; these hopes and rumors appear unsubstantiated. In particular, a Wattpad based claim is going around that one of the creators of YOI is homophobic which some speculate was done by bad agents [7]
