Some fans enjoy shipping Hua Cheng and Xie Lian as they were before the main events of the story. This often takes the form of works set pre-canon or with Hua Cheng losing his memories and reverting back to Wu Ming. Wu Ming is often portrayed in fanworks as more outwardly devoted and subservient to Xie Lian, as well as more innocent and younger than Hua Cheng appears in the main story. When exploring this dynamic some fans prefer to portray Xie Lian as close to later canon while others make him more emotionally volatile and dominant. Works set during or post-canon often involve Xie Lian's guilt and regret over his treatment and loss of Wu Ming.
